In case you couldn’t tell, I love writing and reading 101-word stories.
More than just an exercise in concise storytelling, the small word count begs writers to play with format. Every word matters. Every sentence has to earn its place. The limitations don’t restrict creativity. They force it.
My first published 101-word story ended with a horrific twist. Then, I wanted to write one that was a metaphor. Then one driven forward by subtext. Each story became an experiment. Could I create a surprise? Could I make the reader understand something I never said? Could I let what was left unsaid carry the weight?
This short-form format offers a canvas where almost anything goes, as long as it tells a story.
Wanting to see how much story I could create from a reader’s assumptions in only 101 words, I wrote this little ditty: Iced.
Full disclosure: this story was rejected by 101words.com. The editors felt the ending left readers feeling cheated. Fair enough. I saw it differently. I thought it was a fun little story told in 101 carefully selected words.
That’s the beauty of storytelling. Sometimes a story lands exactly the way we intend. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes the reader sees something we never considered.
